About :

The main activity at the Department of Magnetic Materials and Functional Oxides (DMMOF) is addressed to the study of complex oxide materials from both the basic science and the technological applications points of view. Strong research activity is maintained in the preparation of complex oxide-based thin film and superlattices for potential applications in oxide electronics with particular interest in spin-dependent phenomena. Our research interest also includes the study of interface phenomena in thin films and self-organization processes of oxide surfaces and functional oxides and of metallic nanoparticles on substrates of technological interest.

An important part of the scientific activity of the Department is also devoted to the research in new materials including, among others, strongly correlated systems (spin, orbital and charge transitions in degenerated oxides), multiferroic oxides, diluted magnetic semiconductors and new metallic and ferromagnetic systems. Finally we would like to mention our research effort towards the implementation of electrical and electronic devices, such as magnetic tunneling junctions, spin-polarized injectors, switchable GMR devices, etc., based on these functional oxides.

The areas of current interest at the DMMOF are the following:

Fully spin polarized sources. Magnetic, ferroelectric and biferroic oxides. Interface triggered new phenomena and properties. Nanostructured multilayers with artificial symmetry. Cobaltites, manganites and Bi-based oxides. New ferromagnetic oxides. Diluted magnetic semiconductors. Thermoelectric oxides. Magnetoelectric and magneto caloric materials. Oxides with unusual valencies. Oxides with orbital, charge and spin state transitions. Magnetic nanoparticles. Self-assembly and self-organization processes in substrates of technological interest. Advanced characterization of materials using neutron and sincrotron diffusion techniques.
