The electronic and information industries are presently looking for novel materials with specific multifunctionalities, which employ inorganic as well as organic semiconductors and molecular materials, in order to create high added value and easily processed materials with novel properties. Materials involved in the transmission, storage, and processing of information are important. Likewise important are optoelectronic functionalities useful for sensors, detectors, or photovoltaic energy generation. The search for new materials with novel compositions and organisations is a prevailing goal on the World stage, and the characterisation of the materials is essential to understanding systems in order to improve upon them. In this sense, the ICMAB is in a privileged position in that both synthetic chemists and chemical physicists are engaged in ground breaking work in these areas.
